We recently completed a stunning Cosmic Black granite installation at a property in Wysall, Nottinghamshire. The project was commissioned by Guy Phoenix, and it centres on a beautifully designed kitchen island that has become a truly spectacular centrepiece for the home.
Cosmic Black is a bold and elegant natural granite, full of character. Its rich black background is crossed by dramatic gold and bronze veining that flows across the surface in sweeping, wave-like patterns. Because it is a natural stone, no two slabs are ever the same, so every installation is completely unique.
Granite is also one of the hardest natural materials used for worktops. It is highly resistant to heat and scratches, making it a practical choice for a busy kitchen as well as a beautiful one.
For this project, the granite was given a luxurious leathered finish. Unlike a polished surface, a leathered finish has a soft sheen and a subtle texture that you can feel under your fingertips. It brings out the natural movement in the stone, adding depth to the gold and bronze veining whilst keeping the black base rich and dark.
A leathered finish is also more forgiving in everyday use, as it is less likely to show fingerprints and water marks than a highly polished surface.
The island is the heart of this kitchen, and it was designed on several levels. The main worktop houses the hobs, whilst a raised section steps up around two sides, supported on granite blocks that give it the appearance of floating above the surface below. A lower granite ledge wraps around the outside of the island, creating an open recess beneath the raised section.
Each level shows off the stone in a different way. The veining sweeps across the large surfaces, whilst the base of the open recess is finished in granite too, so the stone can be appreciated from every angle as you walk around the island.
Substantial statement edges give the granite real presence. The thick, bold profile on the worktops and raised section makes the island feel solid and luxurious.
The Cosmic Black granite sits perfectly within the wider kitchen design. Dark handleless cabinetry, a fine bronze-toned trim beneath the raised section and warm LED lighting along the plinths all pick up on the gold and bronze tones in the stone.
The granite also continues onto the worktops along the back wall, tying the whole kitchen together, whilst large glass doors open out onto a courtyard garden.
Leathered granite is easy to look after. Day to day, a soft cloth with warm water and a little mild washing up liquid is usually all that is needed. Harsh or acidic cleaners are best avoided, and spills should be wiped up promptly. Like all natural granite, it benefits from periodic resealing, and we are always happy to advise our customers on aftercare.
A design like this calls for careful planning at every stage, from selecting the slabs to templating, cutting and fitting each piece so the levels, joints and edges line up precisely. We are very proud of how this installation turned out. It is another beautiful example of what can be achieved when natural stone meets exceptional craftsmanship.
