A stunning transformation featuring Lux Grey quartz worktops with elegant Ogee edge detailing across two levels.

The Project Overview

When homeowners in Nottingham decided to create their dream kitchen, they turned to A & J Granite Solutions Ltd to deliver a sophisticated worktop solution that would combine timeless elegance with modern functionality.

The brief was clear: create a luxurious cooking and entertaining space featuring premium quartz worktops that would serve as the centrepiece of their newly fitted kitchen.

Our team was tasked with installing Cimstone's exquisite Lux Grey quartz worktops throughout the kitchen, including a striking central island and extensive perimeter countertops. The challenge was to create a seamless flow across two different levels whilst maintaining the material's beautiful natural veining pattern.

Material Selection & Design Features

Cimstone Lux Grey Quartz

The homeowners selected Lux Grey from Cimstone's premium quartz range, a sophisticated choice that perfectly captures the appearance of natural Calacatta marble. This engineered stone features a pristine white base with delicate grey and gold veining that flows organically across the surface, creating visual interest whilst maintaining a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

Lux Grey quartz offers significant advantages over natural marble, including superior stain resistance, exceptional durability, and minimal maintenance requirements. Unlike marble, which requires regular sealing, this quartz surface remains non-porous and hygiene-friendly, making it an ideal choice for busy family kitchens.

The Ogee Edge Profile

A distinctive feature of this installation is the Ogee edge profile applied to the breakfast bar areas. This classical edge treatment adds a touch of traditional elegance with its characteristic S-curve design, creating subtle shadow lines that catch the light beautifully. The Ogee edge elevates the worktop from standard to bespoke, demonstrating attention to detail and craftsmanship.

The profile was carefully selected to complement the kitchen's classic shaker-style cabinetry, creating harmony between the traditional joinery and contemporary stone surfaces.

Installation Highlights

Two-Level Island Design

The centrepiece of this kitchen is the impressive two-tiered island, featuring contrasting dark blue cabinetry that provides striking visual contrast against the luminous Lux Grey quartz. The primary work surface sits at standard worktop height, whilst a raised breakfast bar area creates a casual dining space and shields the main preparation zone from view.

Seamless Integration

The installation required meticulous planning to achieve virtually invisible joints across the expansive run of perimeter worktops. Our fabrication team carefully book-matched the quartz slabs, aligning the veining patterns to create a continuous, flowing appearance around the kitchen layout.

Precise cutouts were created to accommodate the induction hob, undermount sinks, and integrated appliances. Each opening was templated digitally during our site visit, guaranteeing millimetre-perfect accuracy that allows fixtures to sit flush with the worktop surface.

Quartz Worktop Installation Process

Initial Site Survey & Templating

Our process began with a thorough site survey once the kitchen cabinets were fully installed. Using digital laser templating technology, we captured precise measurements of every worktop area, accounting for the two-level island configuration and multiple appliance cutouts.

This digital approach eliminates the guesswork from traditional templating methods, providing our fabrication team with exact dimensions to work from. The homeowners were able to approve the layout and edge profiles before any cutting commenced.

Fabrication & Quality Control

Back at our Nottingham workshop, our skilled fabricators cut and shaped the Cimstone quartz slabs according to the approved template. The Ogee edge profile was carefully machined onto the breakfast bar sections, with each curve polished to a perfect finish.

Every piece underwent rigorous quality inspection before leaving our facility, checking for accurate dimensions, flawless edge finishing, and proper cutout positioning. This attention to detail at the fabrication stage is essential for achieving a seamless installation on site.

Installation Day

On installation day, our experienced fitting team arrived with the pre-fabricated quartz sections, carefully protected during transit. The installation progressed systematically, beginning with the perimeter worktops before moving to the more complex two-tier island.

Each section was positioned precisely, with joints aligned to create invisible seams. Specialist adhesives were applied to bond the quartz securely to the cabinet framework, whilst allowing for any minor adjustments needed to achieve perfect alignment.

The final stage involved sealing all joints with colour-matched compounds and completing a thorough clean of every surface. Our team provided the homeowners with care instructions to help maintain their beautiful new kitchen worktops.

Design Considerations

This project exemplifies several key design principles that contribute to a successful kitchen installation. The contrast between the dark island cabinetry and light perimeter units creates visual depth, whilst the consistent Lux Grey worktop surface unifies the entire space.

The two-level island configuration offers practical benefits beyond aesthetics. The raised breakfast bar provides casual seating whilst concealing kitchen clutter from dining guests. This design also creates natural zones within an open-plan layout, subtly separating the cooking area from social spaces.

For homeowners considering quartz worktops, the Lux Grey colourway offers remarkable versatility. Its neutral palette complements both traditional and contemporary cabinet styles, whilst the marble-effect veining adds character without overwhelming the space.
